How Great is Jesus?
How great is Jesus? Is He exceedingly great, meaning His greatness infinitely surpasses all other supposed greatness? Or, is He equally great, meaning His greatness exists alongside other greatness? What do you say? Here’s what the Psalmist says,
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3).
“Unsearchable” greatness, now that’s great! Paul puts it this way in Colossians 1:15-18,
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”
How great is Jesus? In a word, “preeminent.” This means the greatness of Jesus is above and beyond all other greatness. His greatness towers over everyone and everything. This is not merely a profound point but a practical point. If Jesus is, in fact, “preeminent” this has far reaching personal implications. Nothing is off limits. Our entire life must be reoriented to the Preeminent One.
Sunday we will look into this very thing as we return to our study in Colossians. Our text will be Colossians 1:15-18. Take time between now and Sunday morning to read and pray over these verses. Ask the Lord to open your eyes and give you the grace to respond to the staggering superiority of the Preeminent Jesus.
How great is Jesus? Exclusively great! Exceedingly great! Enjoyably great!
